Jason - Guitar, Harp & Vocals
EMay - Vocals
Wytold - Cello & Vocals
Soulful vocals, precise instrumentation, creative presentation and
mesmerizing melodies...
All this and more entangle to form
the innovative original music of Between Liberties.
Between Liberties
rocketed onto the scene in Pittsburgh late in 2007, quickly garnering a
dedicated underground following with emotionally charged songs that surpass
their years.
The soulful vocals of front woman EMay blur the line between graceful
lyricism a la Joanna Newsom or Joni Mitchell and the provocative grittiness
of Janis Joplin or Alanis Morisette. She has been told that she has no
choice but to spend her life performing - but this shouldn't be a problem:
As a young girl of six, she was known to get standing ovations by drunk
apres-skiiers in New Hampshire for singing Karaoke, breathe down the neck of
lounge musicians who in turn show her their chops, or simply become lost at
wedding receptions - only to be found sitting two feet in front of the folk
band in the other room. However, she has had no formal vocal training,
learning most of what she knows of her trade through rapt observation.
Still, her 4-octave range and convincing multi-lingual performances will
assure you she is a confident professional.
Raised a classical cellist with a vivid sense of contemporary music,
Wytold's melodies are the reason this music is undeniable. The phrasings are
quirky and engaging musings from a language distant yet familiar. Though his
introduction to contemporary cello was also his first lesson in playing the
blues, he has expanded his repertoire to include Jimi Hendrix, Kelly
Clarkson, and the Smashing Pumpkins. And just wait - his smile will melt any
young girl's heart, and any kind soul will find a kindred spirit within him.
With energetic rhythms and contagiously quirky phrasings, Wytold's songs are
a passionate glance at a life we have all lived.
Jason's precise and eclectic instrumentation sheds a new light on how a
guitar is meant to be played. With thoughtful intentions and creative
improvisations, Jay plays with an intuition rival to and as writes as
inspirationally as his influences: Bela Fleck, the Subhumans, Queensryche,
and Bruce Springsteen. Though he didn't pick up guitar until his late teens,
his passion for his instrument has helped him develop the skill and
dedication to place him among the most talented players of the day. His
skill at writing emotion-filled melodies and driving rhythms provide the
solid foundation for Between Liberties, while his decorative fills flavor
the delicious mixture that will leave you smiling days after the experience.
This trio of
titillating performing songwriters have been known to stun an audience to
silence, though the energetic music often causes sweat to be broken.
Though they
may not save the world, they believe that heady music, healthy greens and
honest friends can lead to a happy and happening life. In the meantime,
they're playing music on the little island between East and West Liberty,
before captivating the hearts of the rest of the world.
Many live
recordings are in circulation, and in the spirit of free trade, the band
would encourage you to share what you have with your friends. However, also
in the spirit of free trade, you are encouraged to see live shows and
purchase their forthcoming debut album, which will be recorded in 2008.
Until then, let
the sun shine upon your back - let your feet walk light upon this earth -
learn to understand the prickles that your skin surprises you with - and may
you too one day find Between Liberties. |
